Armenian startups have been making headlines in the tech news for quite some time now and with Dzook, they have definitely made another big step in this directions.
What is Dzook you ask? Well the word itself means Fish in Armenian, but according to their Medium page, Dzook is an AI assisted platform that allows users to convert photos into illustrated portraits and videos into animation.
Here’s the story of Dzook, according to Inna Vardanyan:
It all started in 2017. It was a usual sunny morning when our current CEO and co-founder of 3dzook, Agata, was doing her favorite thing — drawing. This time she decided to draw the portrait of her friend. After finishing the portrait she photoshopped it on the phone case and posted it to social media to get the opinion of her friends.
Can you imagine our surprise when we received messages asking for similar cases the same day? That was when we, 3 enthusiastic and passionate about art friends, spontaneously came up with the idea of creating a company that will sell phone cases with illustrated portraits on them. We called it 3dzook. “dzook” in Armenian means “fish”. Many of you might ask: why 3 and why “fish”? Everything is very simple: 3 — because initially there were 3 of us; “fish” — because each of us loves and enjoys freedom, space, water, and, eventually, it is a good symbol.
That was how we began our small business. Later, we expanded it with new products: T-shirts, notebooks, passport cases, mugs, thermal mugs, and more.
At first, our activity was limited only in the territory of Armenia. However, soon we started receiving orders from abroad as well. As we started receiving more and more orders from inside and outside Armenia both for personal and corporate needs, we understood that it is becoming impossible to fulfill that amount of orders and develop our business by drawing solely by hand.
That was when we met our future CTO. Together we created a new algorithm based on the database that consisted of thousands of artworks that would learn to draw exactly like us. Through Aila, that was how the algorithm was called, simple photos convert into illustrated portraits of different art styles within several seconds.
As we conducted a survey that showcased the desire of people to see an illustrated version of themselves instantly, we’ve decided to go further. After endless brainstorms and idea generations, we’ve got the result totally worth all the work we have done. We’ve decided to create the dzook app and web platform that will give users an opportunity to upload their photos and instantly create their illustrated character in an art style they like. Later those illustrated portraits can be used to order personalized t-shirts, phone cases, mugs, notebooks, and other staff with their character on it.
The app and the website platform are on the final stage of their development and will be ready very soon. So in case you are interested to be one of the first to try them out, feel free to subscribe by following the link and get insider-only updates and offers.
